Get to know our beloved Fitness Coordinator and wellness extraordinaire, Heidi!
“I actually started in fitness long before I ever thought of it as a profession. I was a competitive gymnast from the age of 10 through college at Ball State University. While I was in University, my love of fitness evolved into an Exercise & Health Science degree. I wanted to share my love for exercise into helping others and when I saw the impact that intentional movement can have on the quality of life, that inspired me to focus on creating programs that support strength, independence and overall wellness. I chose the profession I wanted to be in at a young age.
Coming to Arbor Acres to continue my career was a choice. I saw both a need and an opportunity in the Wellness/Fitness Center. My belief has always been, “If you build it, they will come”. I wanted to build programs that residents and Artists would be excited to be part of. I saw the opportunity to grow a stronger wellness culture, and I believed if we build meaningful, engaging programs, residents would come.
In the Wellness Center, I’m looking forward to expanding my programs for all levels of health and fitness and continuing to build strong relationships within the community. At home, I’m focusing on staying balanced and energized. I love to hike, bike, practice yoga, and take weekend adventures of any kind to bring my best self to everything I do.
This year, I am especially looking forward to watching my 4-month-old grandson Jay grow up. Being part of his life as he changes from week to week is one of my greatest joys!
One of my favorite memories has been watching a resident who was initially hesitant to join classes gradually build confidence over time. At first, they stayed near the back and moved cautiously, but week by week, they became more engaged, stronger, and more comfortable. The moment that really stood out was when they shared how much better they felt—not just physically, but mentally—and how coming to class had become a highlight of their week. Seeing that transformation and knowing I played even a small role in it is incredibly meaningful to me.
Another memory that stands out is of a themed class where everyone really leaned in—there was laughter, music, and such a lighthearted atmosphere. Seeing all residents let loose, smile, and truly enjoy the moment was a great reminder that fitness can and should be fun. Those moments of joy are just as important as the physical benefits.”
Heidi has transformed how we approach wellness at Arbor Acres and is a community rockstar!
