Arbor Acres Names New President & CEO

The Board of Directors at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community is pleased to announce Andrew Applegate as the community’s new President and CEO. Applegate most recently served as the Vice President and Executive Director of Asbury Solomons, a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Solomons, Maryland. Prior to his time at Asbury Solomons, Applegate served as an administrator at retirement communities in Maryland, Nebraska, Illinois, and Florida.

“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Arbor Acres. My wife, three children, and I can’t wait to start calling Winston-Salem home,” says Applegate. “It is a privilege and joy to be able to follow in the footsteps of David Piner who has built a community that has such an engaging culture coupled with the strong financial foundation. The incredibly warm greeting has truly been overwhelming.”

Applegate earned his Associate Degree of Applied Science in Human Services, Nursing Home Administration Specialization, from Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska.  He also has Bachelor of Science in Health Occupations Education from the University of Nebraska and a Masters of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in Orlando, Florida.

Applegate is replacing David Piner, who is retiring after 32 years at Arbor Acres. Piner was hired as the community’s health care center administrator and then served as the President and CEO for the last 29 years. “Andrew possesses a perfect background and the requisite gifts of heart and mind to equip him to lead Arbor Acres into the future.  I am delighted by his selection,” said Piner.  “As a candidate, Andrew demonstrated the highest level of sensitivity to Arbor Acres’ historic and continuing emphasis on caring, excellence, and beauty.  He is the leader Arbor Acres needs as it enters its third generation of service to seniors.”   Applegate was one of four finalists chosen from dozens of applicants during the community’s national search which started last year. A group comprised of residents, current and former board members, and staff formed the search committee.
