Steps toBecoming a Resident
The minimum age for entrance to Arbor Acres is 62. In the case of a married couple, the spouse may be 60. All prospective residents must first fill out a Residency Application and be financially qualified and approved for residency. Applicants to our Independent Living accommodations must be in good health and able to maintain an autonomous lifestyle.
When space is available, direct admission to Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing may be possible.

The Arbor Acres Residency Agreement is a modified Type C continuing care contract designed to support your lifestyle today while helping you plan for future needs. It includes a one-time entrance fee and monthly service fee, providing independent living with access to assisted living and skilled nursing if needed. While higher levels of care may involve additional costs and conditions, the agreement offers a thoughtful way to enjoy today with added confidence for tomorrow.
Advantage ProgramBefore the Move
The Arbor Acres Advantage Program gives individuals and couples in the Winston-Salem area a way to become off-campus residents of Arbor Acres before making a move to campus. With an established entrance fee and monthly fee, members gain access to select Arbor Acres amenities, programming, and services while continuing to live in their current home.

Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community is a full-service, accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) that opened in March 1980.
We are organized under the North Carolina Non-Profit Corporation Act and are affiliated with the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Arbor Acres is the only CARF-CCAC-accredited community in Winston-Salem.

Our community is located on 86 acres of rolling meadows within the city limits of Winston-Salem, minutes from downtown. Winston-Salem, rich in culture and the performing arts, is in the Piedmont area of North Carolina: 4 hours from the beach and 2 hours from the mountains. We are 30 minutes away from our regional airport. Residents have quick access to major hospitals and a medical school, multiple shopping centers, theaters, major universities, community service organizations and recreational parks.

Yes! We welcome your four-legged friends. We have a free-run dog park on campus. We will simply ask you to sign a pet policy, but there is no pet deposit fee. We like to know how to care for your pet if you cannot.

Yes. Arbor Acres is a 501(c)(3) organization under federal law and is also a tax-exempt organization under North Carolina law. Gifts are tax-deductible.

Arbor Acres is a fee-for-service community. Becoming a resident involves payment of entrance and monthly fees that cover the costs of residency. Entrance fees are tied to the size of the accommodations and are refundable through an amortization process at 2% per month for the first 50 months of residency. Monthly fees cover the costs of programs and services provided by Arbor Acres, including weekly housekeeping, all interior and exterior maintenance, a dining plan, electricity/natural gas in apartments, streaming TV, wireless internet, transportation to doctor’s appointments, recreation and wellness programs, social activities, and more.

What does “CARF accreditation” mean?
CARF stands for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. CARF accreditation is a sign of quality and is an important consideration when choosing a retirement community. Achieving accreditation requires us to commit to quality improvement, focus on the unique needs of each resident, and monitor the results of services. An organization receiving a five-year accreditation voluntarily puts itself through a rigorous peer review process and demonstrates to a team of surveyors during an on-site survey that it is committed to conforming to the industry’s best practices nationwide. Arbor Acres is proud to have achieved accreditation every five years for the last 30 years.
